NEW CITY, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- Rockland County is joining the small group of counties that are capping local sales taxes on gasoline.
Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef today said he would support the bill passed by his county legislature to cap the sales tax at two dollars per gallon. With gas selling for more than three dollars a gallon on Rockland county, the cap will save motorists about four cents a gallon.
Governor Pataki last month signed a bill that capped the state sales tax on gasoline at 8 cents per gallon, the rate paid when gas costs two dollars a gallon.
Vanderhoef says he will revisit the sales tax cap at the end of the summer driving season. He says the cap will problably cost the county about 800-thousand dollars this year. He wants to make sure the lost sales taxes means property taxes will be raised.
