NEW YORK (AP)  -- New York City police say an officer has shot a man who confronted officers with a loaded handgun, and the man is in critical condition.

The man's identity was not immediately released. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital after the shooting shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday in the South Bronx.

Police say officers were chasing the 47-year-old man when they spotted his loaded .380-caliber handgun.

Police say the man's handgun was recovered at the scene.

It wasn't immediately clear why police initially began chasing him.
