Irvington Man Gets 13 Years for Fatally Stabbing Best Friend

NEWARK, N.J. (AP)  -- A northern New Jersey man has been sentenced to 13 years in state prison for fatally stabbing his best friend during an argument fueled by excessive drinking.

Thirty-three-year-old Terrance Battle of Irvington pleaded guilty in May to aggravated manslaughter and weapons charges. Under the sentence imposed Tuesday, he will have to serve 85 percent of his term before being eligible for parole.

Prosecutors say he stabbed 29-year-old Jonathan Miller of Newark outside Battle's apartment on Sept. 20, 2008. The men had been playing pool and drinking and became involved in a heated argument.

Battle fled to Altoona, Pa., where he was arrested in November.
