A New York City lawyer whose father is a Dead Sea Scrolls scholar has pleaded not guilty to charges he stole identities and used them to discredit his father's professional rivals.
Raphael Golb, who's 49, is the son of Dr. Norman Golb of the University of Chicago. Prosecutors say he used Internet aliases to falsely accuse Dr. Lawrence Schiffman of New York University of plagiarizing his father's work.
Judge Carol Berkman set $15,000 bond for Golb and ordered him to surrender his passport. She scheduled Golb's next hearing for Sept. 23.
Defense lawyer Martin Garbus has said the case is about free speech and that no crime was committed.
The 2,000-year-old scrolls were found in the late 1940s in Israel.
