NY Ranks 4th Nationally in Number of Organic Farms



ALBANY, N.Y. (AP)  -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that New York ranks fourth in the nation in the number of organic farms, behind California, Wisconsin and Washington.
   
The 2007 census of agriculture showed there were 20,437 farms nationwide engaged in organic production. In New York, there were 1,137 organic farms with 131,796 acres in production.
   
Total organic production sales totaled $54.2 million in 2007.
   
In New York, St. Lawrence County has the most organic farms, with 62.
   
The census is conducted every five years and provides facts and figures on virtually every aspect of U.S. agriculture.
