LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) -- Sand collapsed around a boy and trapped him headfirst in a hole he was digging on a New Jersey beach.
His mother's screams alerted others on the 128th Street beach in Long Beach Township Wednesday.
She, along with the beach patrol and bystanders, used their hands to dig out the 10-year-old.
Officials say the child was unable to breathe for about a minute and CPR was performed. The boy started breathing on his own and he was taken to a hospital, where his condition was not available.
Deputy Police Chief Leslie Houston says the beach patrol warns beachgoers not to dig a hole in the sand deeper than their knees.
