NYC Public Schools Accountability Officer Resigns

NEW YORK (AP) -- The chief accountability officer for New York City schools has resigned.

James S. Liebman says he'll leave the Department of Education on July 20 because his leave from Columbia University is ending. He is a law professor there.

Shael Polakow-Suransky will take over the job for now. The former Bronx high school principal is currently the department's deputy chief schools officer.

Liebman pushed the creation of an $80 million data system and the development of periodic reading and math tests. Critics challenged his credentials and questioned whether his initiatives were worth the cost.

Liebman told The New York Times that while there were disagreements about his tactics, he had to consider what was best for schoolchildren.
