New Laws Regulate Doctors Performing In-Office Surgery

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- New York City lawmakers announced Thursday a new law that regulates surgeries performed inside doctors offices.

Juliet Papa reports

Nationwide and in NYC, the number of surgical procedures performed in doctors offices instead of hospitals has more than doubled in the last decade with nearly 10 million surgical procedures.

Doctors for the first time can lose their medical license -- which can put their patients at risk.

New York State will join with join California and Florida that have enacted similar legislation. The new law which goes into effect on July 14 will protect thousands of patients undergoing surgical procedures in physicians' offices.

According to health experts, plastic surgery performed in a doctor's office poses health risks to patients since there are not as many rules and regulations in place as there are in hospitals.
