Elmwood Park Man Sentenced for Dumping Body in Ravine

NEWTON, N.J. (AP)  -- A New Jersey man has been sentenced to nine years in state prison for dumping a body in a ravine in northwestern New Jersey.

A road crew found the body of 30-year-old John Mitchell of Saylorsburg, Pa., in June 2006.

Sussex County authorities initially charged 39-year-old Edward Mundt of Elmwood Park with murder, but the charge was reduced after defense experts suggested Mitchell died of a cocaine overdose.

Mundt pleaded guilty in January to disturbing and concealing human remains and hindering apprehension.

At sentencing Thursday, Superior Court Judge Peter Conforti ordered him to serve the term consecutively to a sentence he is currently serving for other crimes in Bergen County.
