KEARNY, N.J. (AP) -- A freak highway accident in northern New Jersey has left a young woman in critical condition.
Kearny Police said the 19-year-old woman was riding in a 2007 Honda Odyssey with her father in the southbound truck lanes of Routes 1 and 9 Wednesday when a metal mud flap bracket flew over the divider and smashed through the windshield.
The woman was struck in the head and throat by the object. Her father drove her to University Hospital in Newark, where she underwent surgery.
Police say the unidentified woman is in critical but stable condition.
They say it's not clear whether the object came off a truck or was on the roadway and was flipped into the air by a passing vehicle. An investigation is continuing.
