Victim: Man Yelled 'This Is My Country!' During S.I. Beating

NEW YORK (AP)  -- An Hispanic man who was brutally beaten with a baseball bat says one of the suspects yelled "This is my country!'' during the bias-fueled attack.

Luis Maltez, a native of Nicaragua, needed 18 stitches in his head following the attack last month on Staten Island. He also suffered bruised ribs.

He says one attacker yelled a profanity while referring to "Mexicans.''

Maltez, who works as a cook, has lived in the U.S. for 10 years. His roommate, a native of Mexico, escaped from the attackers.

Police made one arrest Thursday and are still searching for two white men in connection with the attack.

A witness said there was so much blood on the sidewalk that it appeared someone had spilled a bucket of red paint.
