Police Officers Rescue Dog from Canal in Bay Shore

BAY SHORE, N.Y. (AP)  -- Police officers went into the water to rescue a dog from a canal in Bay Shore, Long Island.

Suffolk County officers plucked the German shepherd mix from the Brightwaters Canal early Friday. Police say the canal is about seven feet deep.

Two of the officers suffered minor bites from the frightened animal.

A couple driving by the canal had spotted the tagless dog. When they got out of the car and tried to help, it jumped into the water.

The dog has been taken to a shelter.
