3 Killed, 7 Wounded in Newark Shootings

TRENTON, N.J. (AP)  -- A third shooting in six hours in Newark has left two people wounded, making it three killed and seven wounded in a day of violence in New Jersey's largest city.

Al Jones reports

Gunfire first erupted shortly after 1:30 p.m. near Newark's Weequahic Park. Five people were shot -- three men and two women -- according to Essex County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Paul Loriquet.

One of the women, 35-year-old Nakisha Allen of Newark, was killed. Three others were taken to University Hospital, and the other victim was taken to Beth Israel Hospital, Newark police said.

Loriquet said the area was prone to violence.

``There have been numerous shootings in the area,'' he said.

The second shooting occurred a few miles away just before 4 p.m. Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy says at least two men got out of a car and began firing on the victims, who were sitting on a stoop. Two of the men were killed, another injured.

Two others were wounded in a third shooting about 7 p.m. in a neighborhood a few miles north of the second incident.

Police say they don't believe the first two shootings are related. Officials haven't made an assessment on the third incident.

No motive or suspects have been named.

Authorities have not released the names and conditions of any of the surviving victims.

"They could serve as potential witnesses,'' Loriquet explained.

Police say they're searching for a burgundy sedan, which may have fled the scene of the first shooting.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker condemned the violence through his Twitter account, calling the violence outrageous and unacceptable.
