Paterson Meets With Ground Zero Developer on Lease

NEW YORK (AP)  -- World Trade Center developer Larry Silverstein has agreed to continue talks to renegotiate a lease at ground zero after meeting with New York Gov. David Paterson.

Paterson said Monday "it's unfair to the taxpayers'' to completely finance two towers planned by Silverstein with public money. But he says Silverstein agreed to delay seeking arbitration for a few weeks after meeting in Manhattan on Monday.

Silverstein could have gone to arbitration Monday to challenge 2006 agreement with the site's owner, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, to build up to three towers.

Silverstein has sought over $3 billion in financial backing to help build two skyscrapers. The Port Authority recently agreed to put up money for two, but only if Silverstein put up at least $600 million.
