Teen Accused in Upper East Side Starbucks Blast Dons Ankle Monitor

NEW YORK (AP)  -- The 17-year-old teen-ager accused of bombing a Starbucks coffee shop in New York City will wear an electronic ankle bracelet as part of a deal to remain free on bail.

Kyle Shaw was released on $300,000 bail last week after being arrested on charges of arson, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal mischief in the bombing of a Starbucks shop on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

Police say Shaw was trying to emulate a character in the movie, "Fight Club.'' The explosion shattered the store's windows but caused no injuries.

When an indictment against Shaw was unsealed Monday, prosecutor Christopher Ryan argued that he should be jailed without bail.

Shaw pleaded not guilty.

Defense lawyer Adam Perlmutter suggested the electronic bracelet.

Justice Charles Solomon accepted the suggestion and let Shaw remain free.

Perlmutter said the monitoring device would be affixed to Shaw before he left the courthouse Monday.
