NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Newark Mayor Cory Booker says a rash of shootings in the city show that more work must be done to reduce gun violence.
Three people were shot dead and seven others wounded in three separate shooting incidents Monday in New Jersey's largest city. Police have said the shootings are unrelated.
Homicides and shootings are down in Newark over the last few years, but Booker says the level of violence is unacceptable.
"This in and of itself should drive every resident of our city to condemn this and say this is not a reflection of who we are," Booker said Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Police Director Garry McCarthy says his department is following strong leads in the two fatal shootings.
In one, gunfire from a car killed a 35-year-old woman and injured four others in the South Ward. A few hours later, two men were killed and one was wounded as they sat on a stoop near Interstate 280.
