Forest Hills Parking Spots Leave Many Scratching Their Heads
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A new parking system on 108th Street in Forest Hills has many residents and motorists scratching their heads.
John Montone reports
The city's Department of Transportation has flipped the parking lines on some streets in the neighborhood to encourage drivers to back into the angled spaces.
However, since the new lines are intended for drivers to back into, it is leaving many motorists that try parking headfirst baffled.
"They painted the lines in backwards," said Steve Goodman of Forest Hills. "Why are they backwards like this? This is crazy!"
The theory behind the lay-out is that drivers will back their cars into the spots so, when leaving, they can see oncoming traffic, which is safer than backing out into traffic, according to the DOT.
The DOT has implemented similarly designed parking spaces at scores of other locations citywide for years, including 31st Street in Astoria.
The DOT says they will install signs in Forest Hills instructing drivers to back into the spots which, hopefully, will ease up some of the confusion.
At least 26 cities in the United States use back-in parking including Tuscon, Ariz., Indianapolis, Ind., and Vancouver, Wash., according to Get About Columbia which supports the initiative in Missouri.

Forest Hills Parking
Do you think the back-in parking space layout is safer and more effective?
07/24/2009 8:33AM
Yeah right
...like New Yorkers let each other back into a parking spot. I thought you people were supposed to ride your superb and problem free excellent subway system instead driving cars anyway. Morons.
07/24/2009 8:45AM
Good Idea
I live in an area that has had this type of parking for a whaile. Once you get used to it, it is alot safer. Change isn't always bad!
07/24/2009 8:52AM
DUH
most people in NY can't drive and you expect them to back into a spot? double duh
07/24/2009 8:55AM
learn how to park
the reason they can`t park foward is because it`s not meant to park like that back in and your problems are solved.an to the comment of yeah right . not sure where your from but if your not from new york you should try spending time here to see what new york is really like

I think all drivers need to get a city sponsored driver's card ($15,00) which would ensure that they are smart enough to back into a spot. We could set up a new dividsion to issue the cards (say 400 employees). Then they could start backwards-driving classes - another 100 instructors. Give me a break. Your driving down the stree with someone on your ass. You then stop to ? back-up ? into a spot but you can't because the guy behind you is one foot from your bumper. How about instead we fire the idiot at DOT that implemented this.
07/24/2009 9:01AM
yeah right ....?
"Yeah right" is probably from NJ. Where the only trafficking the mayors and assembly men have to worry about trafficking is human organs.
07/24/2009 9:02AM
Bad Idea
People could get into just as many accidents backing into a spot than pulling out of one.

Learn to Back In, What's the Problem?
What's the fuss? Of course backing in is safer. Yes, there is a learning curve, but it's a short one -- even the most spacially challenged driver can master it. Once this initial resistance to change is overcome, I believe it will lead to safer, less accident-prone parking habits. Let's get with the program! WIsh we had this ordinance in every town.

NY drivers
Some of the comments here are obviously from out of town idiots, such as the one pictured in the photo, obviously clueless as to how to maneuver a motor vehicle, NY has the best drivers, as any NY'er already knows, and does not have to be convinced of that. I would pay to watch someone with a NJ plate, or NH, or even worse, PA, try to park in that spot-- guaranteed the guy in the photo is not a native New Yorker! those drivers will be the one's circling for an hr with a confused look on their face--
07/24/2009 9:22AM
Of Course...
I'm surprised drivers didn't realize that all they needed to do is back into the parking space. There are many places around the city that have spots like this...I've even seen some spots in Manhattan that say if you don't back in you'll get a ticket.
07/24/2009 9:32AM
Correction, NY drivers
Most folks with PA plates in NYC are NYC residents who've illegally registered their car in PA to save money on sales tax, insurance, and fees.
07/24/2009 9:45AM
Poor Communication
Where are the signs instructing the drivers ??? Traffic signage is the worst.
07/24/2009 9:48AM
Zippy

The person who wrote this is a moron

Backing in is MUCH safer
They've had this on 71st Avenue near Electchester for ages. No problems there.
07/24/2009 10:09AM
JR
I think the DOT is ass backwards just like these new lines, yes I live in this area, give me a break
07/24/2009 10:24AM
Mess
Backing in on 108th street is really a bad idea. There are trucks, buses, pedristrains that hang out in the street, kids in the street and people that cannot drive to well. It is not that type of area for this. Drivers are just crossing from the other side of the street to pull in. Also ambulances come racing down the streets. DOT will be causing a dangerous situation.
07/24/2009 10:31AM
what the
drivers licenses are given out to anyone...doesn't matter if you can park...most people can't drive..and whats with those BUMPER PROTECTORS like in the picture?? will someone tell these people that they;re supposed to be put in the trunk while driving??? idiots
07/24/2009 10:49AM
Dangerous Ssituation
our tax money at work .People will be hurtcars will back on to the sidewalk
07/24/2009 11:15AM
CHECK THE MANUAL
I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN BACKING INTO PARKING SPACES EVER SINCE I LEARNED HOW TO DRIVE 50 YEARS (I BELIEVE THE DRIVER MANUAL SAYS THAT WHENEVER POSSIBLE YOU SHOULD BACK INTO A SPACE (FOR BETTER VISIBILITY WHEN EXITING)
07/24/2009 11:18AM
Bad Drivers
Are these drivers that stupid? If you don't know how to back up into a parking spcae, then you really should not be driving. It's a great idea and it's effective. Why is this even an issue?
07/24/2009 11:22AM
Read Your Manual
Backing into spaces is the safest way. Much better for visibility upon exiting the spot. In fact, I could never understand why people park nose-in in hte first place. It's clear as day in the manual.
07/24/2009 11:37AM
peripheral vision
If you wear bifocals or have any peripheral vision problems, backing in is unsafe. It's also an unsafe move when you are texting or twittering. How about a simple perpendicular set of lines. Like the rest of the U.S. parking lots.
07/24/2009 12:38PM
Back-in or Back-out...
It doesn't matter. I live in Queens. I've seen driving there that makes me weep for humanity, especially the 15-minute back and forth parallel parking in spaces that you can fit a jumbo jet in. The driving tests are obviously way too lax.
07/24/2009 12:42PM
Peripheral Vision?
Um...if someone's bifocals or peripheral vision problems present that much of an issue, then, backing out of a spot would be just as dangerous as, apparently, these people shouldn't be driving in the first place. Perpendicular lines? Five minutes in NYC will show you that this city is not one giant parking lot and, in fact, is composed of, often, narrow streets that perpendicular parking would take valuable space from; the angled parking not only softens the cut angle but also saves even just a little more space. Yes, driving forward out of the space is safer, obviously. Seriously, these people need to actually learn how to truly drive; this shouldn't be such a huge issue.
07/24/2009 12:46PM
I live and drive in FH and this is a bad idea
The way people drive, city buses and ambulances running up and down 108th St, cars swerving around each other, pedestrians walking between cars, against the lights made it almost impossible to park before the lines were changed. Now it's going to be amess.
07/24/2009 1:07PM
Good Idea
"Check the Manual" is absolutely right but forgot one thing. Most of the people driving in NYC have never read the manula because they don't have licenses.
07/24/2009 3:48PM
LILI
JAPANESE HAVE A SWIVLE SEAT CAR.
07/24/2009 4:24PM
Another Valid Reason?
I think the ulterior motive for this design is to facilitate DOT in spotting expired registration and inspection stickers, which are attached to the front wind shield. Also, it is easier to hook up and tow away a car from the front.
07/24/2009 4:53PM
GET WITH THE PROGRAM
LEARN TO DRIVE
07/24/2009 11:07PM
provides more parking
parking like this adds more spots in the same amount of space
07/25/2009 8:31AM
Better isn't always easy
The majority of drivers shouldn't be on the road to beging with. Most people have no idea what they are doing behind the wheel in general. They can't pull out of a regular spot safely let alone back in! A drivers license should be issued to a proficient driver only. Make the road test a three-day closed-course exam, not the joke it is which allowing anyone with no real world knowledge to pass and eventually leads to these problems. Less drivers, less cars, less congestion, more parking, less hassles, safer roads, no problem backing in. But then, the city, the car industry and the oil companies wouldn't make their profits. Excuse me, let's just keep things the way they are instead.

Alex
Changing the parking rules on 108 St was one of the stupidest city ideas ever. The "nose-in" parking that people got used to on 108th St was there for many many years. The 108 street is VERY wide and the parking spots have a wide "buffer" zone so when backing-out on leaving the parking it would never cause any risk for the bypassing car traffic. The city folks who made the decision for change must have never left their offices and have never seen 108 Street. The new system will create a lot more new accidents rather than prevent them!
07/25/2009 11:53AM
Wrong Change
the spots are too narrow, backing into them will cause many fender benders and dented doors. It was perfect the way it was, as the street is very wide and it had plenty of space for cars to back out
07/25/2009 11:57AM
Wrong Change
One more thing, the DOT idiots should have installed new signs right away to tell people that they now have to back into the spots. It has been a couple of weeks and some people are still doing crazy maneuvers trying to get into these spots head first, and then backing out of them across the yellow divider.
08/03/2009 11:37PM
Won't Change a Thing
Let's see this is right around the corner where not once but twice a guy literally drove thru a business' window (108 & 65th). No one there follows the rules anyways and double-parks. They took a mess of street and turned it into a disaster.
08/12/2009 12:28PM
Good Idea, Wrong Spot
This doesn't work in a congested area like 108th Street.
09/14/2009 3:26PM
Taxation without representation, again
This is just another quick scheme to part citizens with their hard earned money to keep NYC government bureaucracy afloat. They keep wasting money, and therefore need to find other "creative" ways to replenish it at our expense, ofcourse! Did everyone also notice that DMV fees are up 50%, and they are also planning to change license plate colors again soon. (Whats wrong with current ones? they just changed them!). Politicians and their corporate buddies, robbing us again.
