Charges Unlikely for Husband in NY Wrong-Way Crash

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (AP)  -- Attorneys say there's not much chance the husband of a woman who drove the wrong way on a New York highway and killed herself and seven others will face criminal charges.

Prosecutors would have to prove Daniel Schuler was aware Diane Schuler was intoxicated -- and failed to stop her -- when she packed her two children and three nieces into a minivan for a ride back home to Long Island. A witness who saw Schuler when she left the campground said she was sober. State police have said she wasn't impaired an hour later.

But some are left wondering why defense attorney Dominic Barbara paraded the widower before a mob of reporters this week. Daniel Schuler disputed the autopsy findings that his wife was high on marijuana and drunk when she smashed head-on into an SUV.
