Tropical Storm Danny Heads Toward the Tri-State Area

NEW YORK (AP/1010 WINS)  -- Emergency officials are advising Tri-State area residents to prepare for the possibility of heavy rains and flooding as Tropical Storm Danny heads north.

Danny is expected to develop into a hurricane that could threaten Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island this weekend along with portions of the Garden State.

Danny is expected to make some waves around the NYC metropolitan area as well.

Rip currents generated as Hurricane Bill passed far off the coast last weekend forced officials to ban swimmers from entering the ocean at most Tri-State area beaches. Officials say Danny is expected to produce smaller waves.

Joe Pollina of the National Weather Service predicts the waves will grow from their usual 2 or 3 feet to about 5 or 6 feet on Friday. By Saturday morning, the waves could reach 12 feet.

The wind could gust to around 20 to 30 mph on the twin forks of Long Island as the storm picks up steam.

The Red Cross in Nassau County says it has also taken steps to open shelters and deliver items like fresh food and water. Suffolk County parks officials say they are monitoring the storm.

In New Jersey, State Emergency Management Office spokesman Nick Morici says the current weather forecast is calling for heavy rain on Saturday.

Officials are not expecting the rain will be enough to cause heavy flooding. Minor tidal flooding along the coast is possible.

Morici says emergency management officials will actively track the storm through the weekend in case the situation changes.
