'Nightmarish' Ad Created for WWF Shows Planes Converging on NYC

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- It's enough to make New Yorkers who lived through the Sept. 11th terror attacks sick.

A print ad (above) purportedly for the World Wildlife Fund in Brazil featuring dozens of airplanes converging on lower Manhattan with the line "The 2004 Tsunami killed 100 times more people than 9/11." The final line in the ad is "The planet is brutally powerful. Respect it. Preserve it."

The piece was a "spec" ad from the Brazilian branch of ad agency DDB Worldwide, according to Adweek.com. It has been was strongly condemned by the U.S. World Wildlife Fund.

The World Wildlife Fund has issued this statement:

“WWF strongly condemns this offensive and tasteless ad and did not authorize its production or publication. It is our understanding that it was a concept offered by an outside advertising agency in Brazil. The concept was summarily rejected by WWF and should never have seen the light of day. It is an unauthorized use of our logo and we are aggressively pursuing action to have it removed from websites where it is being currently featured. We strongly condemn the messages and the images portrayed in this ad. On behalf of WWF, here in the US and around the world, we can promise you this ad does not in any way reflect the thoughts and feelings of the people of our organization.”

DDB Worldwide issued this statement:

“The ‘Tsunami’ ad for World Wildlife Fund Brazil was created by a team at DDB Brazil in December 2008. The team in question is no longer with the agency. DDB Brazil apologizes to anyone who was offended or affected by the ad.  It should never have been made and it does not portray the philosophy of the agency.”

AdWeek called the ad "tasteless and nightmarish."

SICK
This really freaks me out
09/02/2009 8:47AM
THOUGHTFUL
What are we afraid of? Reality?
09/02/2009 9:00AM
Open mind
Enough already! 9/11 happened and we must move on but that does not mean that we condemn the thoughts and ideas of others. This is the world, full of ideas and notions so open your minds and be free. It was just an ad that is all, nothing else. No reasonto run for the hills as they say.
09/02/2009 9:12AM
not good
that really is a disturbing image and i'm not usually disturebed by anything .
09/02/2009 9:21AM
Enough already!
I was in lower manhattan on 9-11 my "R" train passded through cortland as the first tower started coming down. 1 minute later and the train would have been buried. i was very very close. And yet I dont freak out over 9-11. it was almost a decde ago! donjt squash the creative minds because you need to make drama for yourself. It happened, its over, lets move on!
09/02/2009 9:26AM
thoughts and ideas?
we shouldn't use painful images from a horrific event that killed 2,000 people for commercial purposes.
09/02/2009 9:28AM
Makes me feel sick
I feel sick just looking at this picture. Thanks alot.
09/02/2009 9:31AM
Disavowed
The WWF, in today's papers, has said they did not approve this ad, and the logo was used without permission.
09/02/2009 9:33AM
Over reaction
It's genius. Everyone freaks out when they think of the "terror" of 9/11. It's time people started realising that climate change will do more damage than 9/11 ever did. The reaction to this ad shows how much of a powerful motif it is.
09/02/2009 9:38AM
From Catastrophy to Circus in just 8 years
I for one, am sick of 9/11. I was in the WTC at the time. I lost friends and family. Visit the site this 9/11, it is a circus. It is being commercialized by the likes of rapper JZ and of course the FDNY and NYPD lap it up because they are so egotistical that they can't even work together. I'll remember 9/11 quietly and pray for the ALL the people lost that day.
09/02/2009 9:39AM
Out Of Touch!
This ad ,totally loses its true meaning, and whats with the towers still there 8 years after 9/11,this image should never be reshown, its truly scary and painful.
09/02/2009 9:39AM
It is working....
It is doing the trick, though. I am thinking about how damaging natural disasters are, regardless of the tastelessness of the ad.
09/02/2009 9:40AM
Get the difference ?
One is an act of nature - the other an act of intentional murder.
09/02/2009 9:45AM
9/11 Never forget
For those who say to move on, a message - 9/11 Never, Ever Forget.
09/02/2009 9:46AM
This isn't creativity
This is cheap sensationalism. The point being missed is the ridiculous notion that the tsunami and 9-11 are somehow comparable. 9-11 was man's inhumanity to man. It was terrorism - which by its very purpose creates a certain amount of psychological stress. A tsunami is horrible, but is not an attack on innocent people. It is a natural occurence. The notion that "nature" is doing something against people is preposterous, self-serving mumbo-jumbo espoused by people who would stop real creativity and progress to save a rare weed. To draw a parallel between the attack on 911 and a tsunami is the height of stupidity - surpassed only by those who defend it in the name of "creativity". Free speech I acn understand ... but creativity? Moving on from 911 doesn't mean its ok to commercialize or trivialize its life altering impact on people. You can ask people to respect nature without ghoulish cartoonish advertising.
09/02/2009 9:46AM
Where's Battery Park City?
This is a strange composite. Where is Battery Park City?
09/02/2009 9:48AM
It fails at it's own purpose!
Aside from the obvious that's terribly wrong with it, it doesn't even make it's point as an ad. How would people respecting and preserving the planet have prevented the tsunami!?
09/02/2009 9:48AM
Sick
What on earth does an act of nature have to do with an act of terrorism?
09/02/2009 9:49AM
To compare is wrong
I live in NY and was in the city on that day. While I don't have an issue with 9/11 being used in ads the comparison between a terrorist attack and an act of nature to try and make a point is what upsets me. It's like saying more people die of heart attacks then are murdered. The two are very different scenarios.
09/02/2009 9:53AM
Some people just don't get it
I thought people from all over felt the pain that everyone in NY did that day! Guess not!
09/02/2009 9:58AM
whoever
created this picture should have known better
09/02/2009 10:00AM
the other way around
if an ad agency here had done the same thing about an event that happened in Brazil we would never hear the end of it. So I would hope it would work the same way in this situation. Don't give me that creative freedom crap they're just a bunch of lowlives.
09/02/2009 10:02AM
sick? or creative?
being a NY'er, yes, this picture is sick...but, on the other hand, creativity is the key to success in the advertising world-- tasteless: yes, did they get their point across? yes, exactly the reason they depicted it in the first place.
09/02/2009 10:11AM
Use Logic
Though the death of many people is a tragedy. You can't compare two seperate unrelated situations and say one was worst than the other. 9-11 was an act of war. The tsunami was an act of nature. Us New Yorkers must try to face our fears and get back on the horse. When the next generation embraces the 9-11 history, they won't be anymore sensitive as we were when we heard about other forms terror that dates back to the 18th century when this country was trying to establish its freedom. Tsunami's are tragic too, but what about the earthquakes, hurricanes and other natural disasters that has been plauging humanity for centuries? Do we compare them to WWI & II to drive home a point? No. It just doesn't make sense.
09/02/2009 10:18AM
Talk about insensitive
This ad makes me sick, as someone who's friend lost a cousin in the attack, I think Brazil and this agency owe NYC an apology NOW!
09/02/2009 10:19AM
It all BS
Go to U tube and see what 9/11 was really all about ...make your own conclusion...attack??? my ass!!
09/02/2009 10:21AM
wtc
too bad the "design team" was not in the towers when they fell, a$$ hole$.
09/02/2009 10:34AM
Nice...
Capitalizing on someone's tragedy isn't creative, it's called kicking someone when they're down. Nice job of taking advantage of people in order to get attention to yourself.
09/02/2009 10:35AM
scarlett
while i think the ad is ridic, u people that keep saying "act of nature" cannot be compared to an act of terror..but u're missing the point..what we are doing, and continue to do to the planet might as well be an act of terror. climate change and allthat, it's meant to be a wake up call...and im not a totally "green" person, i'm just saying that's THE MESSAGE.
09/02/2009 10:39AM
they disgust me
enough of this...its like saying the people hu died in tsunamis were more important than 9/11... **** them
09/02/2009 10:45AM
Ms. Thompson
People are Jealous of America. The Holy Master wants us all to Enjoy NYC, every city, every country; Until all sick minds are taught how to love and not hate, the world will continue to be this way; I Love People, I Love Life; This madness against this city has to end; Karma does has its own vision as this photo. Where hate, deceit lies, it returns just like a yo-yo back to the evil one(s). Leave this city in peace evil ones, and stop being jealous; this is all our big city, let's together bring an end to war, hate. Clean up all the cities in the world of this evilness.

Re: Open mind
> Enough already! 9/11 happened and we must move on Yeah, let's move on and forget the Holocaust while we are at it. And every other tragedy in the world. Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. Idiot.
09/02/2009 11:08AM
Emotionalism WAS the point...
The ad group that composited that image very specifically wanted to evoke strong response. That's the whole point of advertising anything: to get you to remember what they're selling, anyway they can. That being said, consider their extraordinary bad taste as a "Larry Flynt" move. Highly controversial on purpose. I stood at a window in Brooklyn and watched the entire disaster from soup to nuts. My 3rd grade son watched the same thing from his classroom window with the rest of his class. I lost 12 people (friends, ex-coworkers)and find the RELEASE of this unsanctioned composite photo to be nauseating. Not because someone thought to produce it, but that because it evoked a horrible moment in my life. No doubt attack-deniers and anti-westerners will use this photo as a recruitment poster for their causes, but There is nothing illegal in this. If enough people express their distaste, without getting inflamatory, maybe fewer images like this would be forthcoming. But don't fool yourself - we'll never be free of bad taste. My answer to the previous post that denied the twin towers were attacked and refered readers to you-tube for "proof": Sir/Madam, you are an idiot.
09/02/2009 11:21AM
FORGET? MOVE ON?
What the hell is wrong with the world? You compare TERRORISM to an ACT OF MOTHER NATURE. I wish for those that never have the seen or felt the terror we have as New Yorker's never feel the same pain. It hurts to this day. BECAUSE Those people WILL NEVERUNDERSTAND...As you can see here. I am sick to my stomach that the two have been compared!

GREAT AD !
This is not insensitive, it is reality. Stop your whining everyone. I lost 3 near and dear people in 9/11 including a cop and this does not bother me one bit. I volunteered through local police there. Why don't all you crybabies think about the tsunami victims...Oh, because that didn't affect you...Bunch of selfish hypocrites.
09/02/2009 11:50AM
911
Its always never forget anything that happens to whites ie holocaust, pearl harbor, the alamo. But anything involving "minorities" should be quickly forgoten about and brushed under the rug, ie slavery, genocide of native americans, jim crow, tuskegge experiments, black wall street.....Katrina. THINK ABOUT IT in this "post racial world"
09/02/2009 12:33PM
Very Intense
I understand why this image upsets people. The fact that you are upset shows the ad has hit it's mark. It's a comparison of how much more devastating nature can be (the tsunami) and what would have been an equivalent man-made disaster. Thus, the multiple planes required to generate the same amount of deaths. However, where the add misses it mark, is there are many many more man-made horrific events that exceeded the death toll of the tsunami (war, the Holocaust, etc.) Nevertheless, it has generated discussion, so while not of great taste, it is effective.
09/02/2009 12:58PM
HURR AMERICUNT
if the picture showed 1/100th of a tsunami and said it was equal to the damage of 9/11, no one would care. the ad proved part of its point, that Americans think they are special when it comes to disaster.
09/02/2009 1:07PM
NO SLEEP
THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS HORRIFIC AD SHOULD NEVER HAVE A NIGHTS SLEEP EVERY AGAIN..HOW HORRIBLE
09/02/2009 1:13PM
not happy
yes, i agree we need to move on, but this ad show disrespect to all of the innocent lives that were lost that day!!!!!!! thus, i find this ad to be a classless and insensitive!!! what a horrible way to try to prove their point!!!
09/02/2009 1:30PM
Downtown
A different apprach by the add team might have been nice. if yopu live or work down here you don't want to see this ( Air Forece 1 fly-over) Are Brazilans always this f'd up?
09/02/2009 1:53PM
Pay back to Brazil
How about an ad of burning and destroying the entire Amazon Basin rain forest? How Brazilians feel about it?
09/02/2009 2:06PM
Obtuse
Violence sells, however, what an obtuse view to depict nature vs. humanity. It's saddens me to think any tradgedy can be sold to thicken someone's bank account. We have seen creativity, now we have seen stupidity.. Peace be with you all.
09/02/2009 2:07PM
HORRIBLE & APPALLING!
What an insult to our country, our city, and most of all the family & friends to all those that were murdered on 9.11.
09/02/2009 2:28PM
Bad Pic
The problem for me is that NYC is still a target if you ask me. I work in NYC, did on 911, and still have nightmares occasionally about airplanes hitting buildings. Get over it??? I don't think so. Reagrding the Tsunami, I thinks it's also a nasty event, something I hope we never see in NYC. The ad belittles both NYC people and victums of that Tsunami.
09/02/2009 2:29PM
things are bad enough
the news is our worst enemy, yea ..go tell everybody our secrets
09/02/2009 2:52PM
Selfish Americans
The US Gov't. donated 950 million dollars and the US public donated 1.875 billion dollars. How can some of you say that we're only concerned with ourselves?? We donated more money than anyone else. 28% of the $10 billion came from here! When 9-11 happen did anyone over there try to help us in any way and not laugh at us as did the people in the surrounding territory? And after our (tax) dollars went there, did we get any condolence when Katrina hit us less than a year later? Are we really that selfish HURR AMERICUNT? The point is: why use such a raw ad when we have proof that we've already done something about this. (You actually done something and you live here!) This country is usually the first on line to do something even though it is the most critized. They want us to mind our business, but it's always okay to just give. Can they promote an ad like this in another country in the same fashion showing that respective country's major setback just to get attention?? Why not? America is not the only place that grants Freedom.
09/02/2009 3:22PM
Accepted
I think it's a disgusting and horrific image. That being said, I also think that the statements by the advertising agency and the WWF speak for themselves, and I believe that their collective apologies are sincere. And I will never forget that tragic day either.
09/02/2009 4:04PM
REALLY HURTFUL!!!!
After surviving 9/11 - that horrific day that still haunts me HOW CAN SOMEONE GET AWAY WITH CREATING SUCH A HORRIBLE AD! In regards to the Tsunami - that was an act of nature what happened on 9/11 was an act of WAR - people hating us so much that they would go so far as to killing us. Hopefully the people behind this add never lives through a disaster and if they do may it HAUNT them for the rest of their life - they deserve IT!!! God bless America!
09/02/2009 5:38PM
u people are babies
"waaaa, waaaa, i still remember 9/11" guess what, we all do. it is a powerful image and the ad makes its point, that americans dont care about anything unless it happens to them. the ad is true, much more people died in the tsunami than in the "attacks" and nature is far more threatening than your so called "terrorists" yes i put quotations around the two words for a reason...and pluleeze air force one flyover, not even low, laughed when i saw people running...if ur still having nightmares its time for therapy..i stopped being freaked out by low flying planes by 2005...we were al affected, most of us moved on, its normal...so yes get over it, no one wants to hear whiny people moan on about 9/11 almost 10yrs later, especially the widows who expected the govt to help them continue living their upper class lives complete with nail and hair appointments..its selfish and it has to stop.
09/02/2009 6:48PM
It hurt
I've gotten over 9/11, but tjis image was not appropriate. Many people still hurt and maybe always will. Those of you who say " get ovet it" should rethink what really happened. Many people are fragile and cannot cope with tragedy and this ad just opened up an old wound making it bleed all over again. Some of us are stronger than others and the weaker should not be put down or degraded in any way. I'm very glad thw wwf has apologized but where were they when this went into print.
