Residents Say It Stinks During Garbage Collector Furlough

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- Piles and piles of trash stink up Ferry St. in the Ironbound section of Newark, New Jersey.

It's been accumulating all weekend long.

The garbage will have to sit and simmer in the sun until Wednesday.

"It looks really bad, I mean it makes the community look dirty. It kind of effects the business, it makes us look like we're grimy," said Andrew Lopes. His family owns a hardware store.

1010 WINS Reporter Steve Sandberg talks with resident Sabino who says "it stinks".

"We have to accept it. They don't work, we have to accept it," said Sabino.

To save money the city has furloughed all non-essential workers on Tuesday, including sanitation.

Only police and fire will be on the job.
