Upstate Ship Captain Receives Honor from Dutch Queen
NEW YORK (AP/1010 WINS) -- The captain of a replica of the ship Henry Hudson sailed 400 years ago has been awarded a special honor from the queen of the Netherlands.
William T. "Chip'' Reynolds of Selkirk, near Albany, was dubbed an honorary knight of Queen Beatrix. The captain of the Half Moon was presented with a medal of the Order of Orange-Nassau at the Dutch consulate in Manhattan on Tuesday.
Reynolds received the medal after his ship took part in ceremonies greeting Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and his wife, Princess Maxima, of the Netherlands on the 400th anniversary of Hudson's voyage up the river.
The medal represents the highest honor the Dutch queen can bestow on an individual who isn't a citizen of the Netherlands.
The 20-year-old Half Moon is taking part in events marking Hudson's quadricentennial.
