NEW YORK (AP/ 1010 WINS) -- The New York City Council has passed a bill requiring school buses running on diesel fuel to install filters that reduce pollution for children inside the bus.
The bill also requires buses to be retired after 16 years of service.
All buses must be outfitted with the filters by Sept. 1, 2011. The filters sit below the bus between the crankcase and the cabin where students ride.
The Department of Education says more than 2,000 buses will get the filters; 2,300 buses have already been fitted with them.
The Natural Resources Defense Council study in 2001 found that students breathe four to six times as much pollution inside the bus than people in other cars.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he will sign the bill.
