Man Arrested in Connection with Hamilton Heights Rapes

NEW YORK (AP/1010 WINS)  -- A 21-year-old Upper Manhattan man has been arrested in connection with four rapes in Hamilton Heights.

Alice Stockton-Rossini reports

The suspect has been identified as Vincent Heyward, 21, of 281 Edgecombe Avenue. Heyward lives just blocks from where the last rape occurred, police said.

Police say he surrendered Sunday night after six hours of negotiations and was taken into custody.

Charges are pending.

Police say a DNA sample taken voluntarily from Heyward matched all four crime scenes.

Police say they took DNA samples from about 10 different people and followed up on nearly 100 tips before zeroing in on Heyward.

The rapist struck four times since Aug. 1. All four attacks took place within a 14-block stretch in Upper Manhattan.

Police say the most recent attack occurred Sept. 7 when the rapist climbed through a 28-year-old woman's bathroom window.

The victim was also robbed.
