Columbia County authorities say 16-year-old Nicholas VanBenschoten was driving Monday night at an excessive speed when he left the north shoulder of the roadway.

The car then struck a culvert and became airborne, crashing into a large stone pillar located at the entrance of a private residential driveway.

Two rear seat passengers, 17-year-old Allison Shaw of Valatie and 17-year-old Jeff Beulieu were transported to area hospitals. Shaw was in stable condition Tuesday while Beulieu was listed as critical.

There was no licensed adult driver in the car at the time of the crash. State law requires those driving with a learner's permit to be accompanied by a supervising licensed driver at least 21 years of age.
