NEW YORK -- Wireless Internet is coming to New York City's parks, just in time for the dog days of August.
Officials are expected to announce Thursday a plan that would establish free wireless networks -- wi-fi for short -- at 18 locations in 10 city parks, including Central, Prospect and Riverside parks, by the end of August.
The Department of Parks and Recreation in 2003 requested bids for the development of wireless Internet technology in a number of parks throughout the city.
Various wireless locations already exist in the city, including Bowling Green and Wall Street Park.
Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe said in a statement that the expanded wi-fi network "will give park visitors even more options to enjoy.''
