Groups Sue MTA to Block Deal for B'klyn Nets Arena

NEW YORK (AP/1010 WINS)  -- Opponents of the Brooklyn arena planned for the New Jersey Nets have filed a lawsuit to overturn an agreement to sell 8 acres of railyards to the arena's developer.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Manhattan state Supreme Court. It seeks to overturn a vote by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to sell the railyards to developer Forest City Ratner for $100 million over 22 years.

The suit was filed by several elected officials and the advocacy groups Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn and the Straphangers Campaign.

The MTA and Forest City Ratner said they had no immediate comment.

The lawsuit is the latest of several legal challenges to the 22-acre Atlantic Yards project. The project is to include office towers and apartments as well as a basketball arena.
