MTA Riders Brace for Delays in Wake of Union Protests
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- As transit workers hold rallies and protests Wednesday -- straphangers and city officials are bracing for possible delays -- after an anonymous text message circulated among workers that allegedly called for operators to carry out bus and subway "slow downs."
The Transport Workers Union Local 100 declared the "day of outrage" to express its anger at the MTA's refusal to pay raises awarded by a binding arbitration panel earlier this year.
The TWU says that members will use their lunch breaks to form picket lines and hand out leaflets at subway and bus locations.
The TWU denied any such "slow down" order originated with them.
Strikes or slowdowns are illegal under state law, and the TWU has been punished for using such tactics in the past.
Two largest marches began today at noon outside Manhattan's 207th Street depot and the East New York depot in Brooklyn.
