NEW YORK (AP/ 1010 WINS) -- Brooklyn is celebrating two big champions -- champion trees, that is.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has named two trees at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden state champions -- meaning they are the largest of their species on record in the state.
The Kansas hawthorn and the Carolina holly are the first trees in New York City to receive this honor.
The awards will be presented at a ceremony Tuesday in the shade of the champion trees.
The hawthorn is 31 feet tall and the holly is 35 feet tall.
Their champion status is also determined by their trunk circumference and the width of their crowns.
