A woman who lives in the area told 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera that she heard four shots.
One of the suspected robbers, 24-year-old Erik Johnson of Bay Shore, was killed. The other was taken into police custody.
Police recovered an aluminum bat at the scene and say it was used to beat the officer during the alleged robbery. The officer sustained injuries to his arm, hand and back, authorities say.
In a separate incident on Long Island, an off-duty NYPD officer shot and wounded at least one person during an attempted carjacking in Elmont Tuesday, police said.
THe officer was sitting in his vehicle at about 1:25 a.m. Tuesday when he was approached by two men. Police say one of the men displayed a knife and attempted a carjacking. Police say the officer fired one shot, hitting the man in the shoulder. He was later arrested at a nearby hospital. The second man fled.
