Woman in Wheelchair Struck by Truck in Lower Manhattan



NEW YORK (AP/1010 WINS)  -- A woman in a motorized wheelchair was struck and critically injured Thursday by a sanitation truck in Lower Manhattan.
   
Fire officials say the truck hit the woman at the intersection of Bleecker St. and 8th near Abingdon Square Park, pinning her beneath the vehicle.

Witnesses identified the victim as 78-year-old Shami Chaikin the sister of Joseph Chaikin, the playwright and director, who died 2003. They say she lived at the Westbeth Artists Building at Washington and Bethune Street.

Witnesses say the woman was in the bike lane when the crash occurred.
   
Officials say the woman was rushed to a hospital in serious condition with head trauma.
   
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
