Man Eyed in Garza Disappearance Jailed in Separate Case

GOSHEN, N.Y. (AP/1010 WINS)  -- A 24-year-old sex offender who was the focus of a state police investigation into the disappearance of a young woman is going to prison for one to three years for failing to register his new address with the state.

Orange County Court Judge Nicholas DeRosa called Michael Mele's lewd conduct at a Rockland County mall "depraved and unfathomable'' as he sentenced him Thursday.

Mele was forced to register as a sex offender after pleading guilty to charges of exposing himself and performing lewd acts at the Palisades Center.

He pleaded guilty in September to failing to report a change of address.

Mele was the focus of an investigation into the disappearance of 25-year-old Laura Garza in Orange County.

The Brooklyn dancer was last seen with Mele on Dec. 3, leaving a Manhattan nightclub. Mele was never charged in the case.
