Fired Conn. Officer Pleads Guilty to Molesting Boy

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP/1010 WINS)  -- A former New London police officer who had advised city children on how to make the right choices in life has pleaded guilty to molesting a boy and is facing a two-year prison sentence.

Forty-six-year-old William Edwards pleaded guilty in Danielson Superior Court on Thursday to risk of injury to a minor, tampering with a witness and violating a protective order.

The plea deal calls for two years in prison followed by 10 years of probation. Sentencing is set for Dec. 21.

Prosecutors say Edwards, who was fired after his arrested last January, sexually assaulting a boy who told authorities he had several encounters with the officer when he was between 5 and 7 years old, from 2001 to 2003.

Edwards' lawyer says he's withholding comment until the sentencing.
