9/11 Memorial Turns Controversial in Connecticut

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP)  -- An effort to honor a Sept. 11 victim in the small Connecticut town of Kent has unexpectedly became a contentious debate. That's because the victim's father has insisted his son's memorial say he was murdered by "Muslim terrorists.''

Town officials say it would be inappropriate to single out a religious group on a project on town property that's paid for with taxpayers' money. The memorial is on indefinite hold.

Peter Gadiel's son, Kent native James Gadiel, was killed at the World Trade Center. He's criticizing town leaders for being too politically correct.

The dispute gained traction when it was featured on Fox commentator Bill O'Reilly's show recently. That led to a flood of e-mails and phone calls to the town supporting Gadiel.
