Upstate Semi-Pro Football Player Charged in Ref Attack

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP/1010 WINS)  -- A referees' organization says it will not longer assign its members to semi-professional football games in the Rochester area because a player hit a ref in the face with his helmet.

The head of the Rochester Chapter of Certified Football Officials says the attack after a recent game and other incidents in recent years led to the decision.

Chapter President Ric Hamblin says referees can decide on their own to work the semi-pro games but they won't be covered by the organization's liability insurance.

A 54-year-old ref suffered severe facial injuries Oct. 24 when a member of the Rochester Cougars used a helmet to bash him in the face.

Police have charged the 23-year-old player with felony assault.

Two other semi-pro teams play in the Rochester area.
