Passaic County To Use Surcharges For Homeless Fund
PATERSON, N.J. (AP/1010 WINS) -- Passaic County is the first in New Jersey to establish a county-run trust fund for the homeless.
A $3 surcharge will apply to transactions handled by the county surrogate, clerk and sheriff's department, starting Dec. 1. The charge would be tacked on to mortgage, deed and foreclosure transactions.
Officials say when the real estate market picks up, the new fees will generate hundred of thousands of dollars a year.
A board will decide exactly how to spend the money.
There are an estimated 1,000 homeless people in Passaic County.
