Rising Unemployment Has More New Yorkers Visiting Food Pantries

NEW YORK (AP/ 1010 WINS)  -- An organization that feeds New York City's hungry says rising unemployment is contributing to more people visiting its food pantries and soup kitchens.

City Harvest said Friday that it will deliver about 8 million pounds of food during its Harvest Season, from Oct. 15 through Jan. 31. That's about 1 million pounds more than last year.

During the months of July through September, City Harvest says New Yorkers visited their food facilities over 400,000 more times than during the same period last year.

It also says 59 percent of its pantries and soup kitchen are seeing more visits by children.
