NEW YORK (AP) -- Want to bag your own bird for Thanksgiving? The Long Island turkey hunting season runs from Saturday to next Wednesday.
People with turkey permits may bag one bird apiece on Suffolk County properties where hunting is allowed.
Thanks to state reintroduction efforts, an estimated 3,000 wild turkeys now roam the area.
Maria Pollatos of Muttontown said a flock chased her 3-year-old son.
Experts say turkeys are generally peaceful. But the males may aggressively defend their territory, especially in mating season. They may see their reflection on a window or a shiny car and think it's a rival.
Farmers and residents have complained about property damage. State biologists say turkeys were blamed for ravaged vineyards, but racoons and smaller birds were the real culprits.
