NEW YORK (AP/ 1010 WINS) -- A Long Island Air National Guard unit has joined the search for a lone Canadian sailor who failed to arrive in Bermuda earlier this week.
A plane with 12 crewmen from the 106th Rescue Wing left Francis S. Gabreski Air National Guard base in Westhampton Beach on Friday to search for the missing sailboat in the ocean between Virginia and Bermuda.
The U.S. and Canadian Coast Guard began the search Thursday for 67-year-old Hubert Marcoux and his sailboat. The experienced sailor left Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Nov. 9 and was expected to arrive in Bermuda on Nov. 16.
Maj. Scott Williams of the 106th Rescue Wing says they frequently conduct long-range rescues, both in the U.S. and in Afghanistan.
