3-Alarm Fire Breaks Out on Atlantic City Boardwalk
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) -- Investigators continue to seek the cause of a 3-alarm fire that destroyed four shops on the Atlantic City boardwalk.
No serious injuries were reported in the blaze, which broke out at the Central Pier shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday and took nearly four hours to bring under control.
The fire apparently started inside a pizza shop, and the flames quickly spread to two clothing stores and a photography shop. Officials say all four businesses were destroyed.
Witnesses said thick smoke billowed out of the pier on the beach side of the boardwalk, between St. James Place and Tennessee Avenue. Ten fire companies and more than 80 firefighters responded to the blaze.
The Central Pier has been hit by multiple fires in its history, including a May 2006 blaze that caused nearly $500,000 in damage.
