Connecticut Prison Officials to Answer Rell on Closure

HARTFORD, Conn. (1010 WINS/AP)  -- Connecticut prison officials expect to recommend this week whether a prison can be closed to help save the state money.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell had asked the Department of Correction for a recommendation by Friday. It comes as the state faces deficits in the hundreds of millions of dollars over the next two years.

Rell cited a decline in inmate population and the agency's success with programs intended to help released prisoners stay out of jail.

About 18,500 people are incarcerated in Connecticut, a drop from the record high of nearly 19,900 in February 2008.

A Department of Correction spokesman says the agency studying whether a facility can be closed, and if so, which one.
