TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey is suspending its requirement that children attending child care or preschool facilities get a seasonal flu shot.
Health Commissioner Heather Howard said Tuesday that the step was necessary because there's a shortage of the seasonal flu vaccine.
Normally, all children 6 months through 59 months of age who attend a day care or preschool facility have to get the shot.
Even though the requirement is temporarily suspended, Howard said her department is still strongly recommending that children get the shot if possible.
The seasonal flu vaccine is different from the swine flu vaccine, also known as the H1N1 vaccine. It, too, is in short supply. The health department recommends that children get both kinds.
