10 Arrested Outside Gracie Mansion During World AIDS Day Protest

NEW YORK (AP/ 1010 WINS)  -- Ten HIV/AIDS activists have been arrested at a protest outside Gracie Mansion, where New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was hosting a World AIDS Day reception.

The building is designated as the official mayor's residence, but Bloomberg lives in his private home elsewhere in Manhattan.

A police spokeswoman, Detective Gina Sarubbi, said the protesters were arrested Tuesday when they tried to chain themselves to a gate.

Housing Works spokesman David Thorpe said the AIDS services group organized the protest. He said its chief executive, Charles King, was among those arrested.

Critics say the Bloomberg administration has cut funding for services for people living with HIV and AIDS, including housing.

Mayoral spokesman Jason Post said the office had no immediate comment.
