NEW YORK (AP) -- City Council Speaker Christine Quinn will visit a Bronx greenmarket Tuesday to talk about a program that helps food stamp recipients buy food at local markets.
The City Council has increased funding to the program, which operates electronic terminals at nine markets around the city.
The terminals allow farmers to accept payment from food-stamp cards, which need to be swiped electronically like debit cards.
Quinn is visiting the Poe Park Green Market on Grand Concourse. After the terminal there was inserted, the market went from processing no food-stamp transactions to accepting 500 dollars a day in food stamp charges.
