Dr. Brian McDonough on Fevers and Children

NEW YORK -- Many parents become concerned when your child’s temperature goes up.

There is definitely a fear of fevers that people have and it’s not unreasonable, but not all fevers are a cause for worry. In fact, fevers can help fight illness in some cases by activating your child’s immune system.

Temperature is not one specific number.

Normal temperature can ranges from 97 degrees to 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Body temperature also varies according to time of day, age and physical activity.

There are certain times you should be particularly concerned…for children younger than three months, with even a mild fever, call your doctor right away. For older children, it never hurts to call your doctor if you have questions, but drinking plenty of fluids and taking medications to control the temperature can help.

If your child has a fever for more than three days, there are other symptoms along with the fever, or your child isn’t acting well, you should definitely check in with your doctor.
