Dr. Brian McDonough on Bipolar Disorder

NEW YORK -- It is called Bipolar Disorder, or Manic Depressive Illness, and for people who live with the condition, it can be debilitating leading to a series of ups and downs as mood swings seem to vary for no reason at all.

Because of the dramatic mood swings, it is often up to family members to pick up the pieces and help.

According to The American Academy of Family Physicians, there are things that can help, including maintaining a regular routine of sleep and waking times, mealtimes and getting regular exercise.

Caffeine and alcohol should be avoided as well as cough medication.
