Skulls, Bones and Laboratory Found in Bronx Basement

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- When a city inspector broke into a locked basement in a Bronx building to check on a faulty hot water heater -- he found more than he bargained for.

1010 WINS AUDIO: Sonia Rincon reports

New York City Police say the inspector discovered a laboratory in a room in the basement of the home on 1912 Holland Ave. set up with viles of acid, formaldehyde and various bones and organs being preserved.

They also found a refrigerator that was storing blood.

The NYPD says tests are being done to see if any of the body parts and bones belong to animals or humans.

The collection also included medical equipment and biology books, and is believed to belong to the building's owner, Barry Greene.

Police say Greene, 62, is in prison on a sex abuse charge.

A search of news archives reveals that  Greene was convicted in 2001 of molesting boys after telling their parents he was taking them to a camp upstate.

Tenants say the building, located in the Morris Park section, has fallen into severe disrepair and no one has responded to their complaints.

The building has four apartments, two of which are vacant.

Police are ruling out criminal activity until the medical examiner determines if any of the remains are human, but even if they are, it is possible they may be legal to possess.

However, police say Greene faces numerous code violations.
