NEW YORK (AP) -- You can throw three coins in the fountain -- but don't dare put in two feet.
There's a law on the city books prohibiting people from wading in city fountains. It could get you a $50 ticket.
Some fountains -- like the Bailey Fountain at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn -- are very enticing.
On a hot day, people sitting along the edge of the fountain enjoying the cooling spray of the water might think there's no harm in jumping into the water to cool off.
The city parks department says people should stick to the municipal pools.
The parks department says fountain water is recirculated and not treated with chlorine. The water can transmit bacteria and disease. Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe adds people throw things into the fountains - like bottle caps, glass and other sharp objects, that can cut a foot.
