New York City Goes Tax Free on Clothes, Shoes

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- Shoppers planning to hit the stores this Labor Day weekend will find a nice surprise at the cash register: a tax break on clothing and shoe purchases.

Right now, shoppers pay no city or state sales tax on clothing and shoe purchases under $110. But a tax relief measure proposed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg earlier this year eliminates the city's portion of sales tax on all of those purchases, no matter what the amount. The break goes into effect Saturday.

The city's portion is 4 percent. Buyers will still pay 4.375 percent in state taxes on items $110 and over.

Bloomberg proposed the measure as part of a $1.3 billion tax relief package that also includes a break on property taxes.

The sales tax break was approved by the state and signed into law on June 29. It was to go into effect on the first day of the next sales tax quarter, which is Sept. 1.
