NEW YORK -- Never mind the two World Series championships -- the New York Mets have a new distinction. Their mascot, Mr. Met, has been named to the Mascot Hall of Fame.
Hall of Fame vice chairman Chris Bruce says the San Antonio Coyote got a few more votes, but the executive committee decided the two mascots should share the honor.
Team spokesman Jay Horowitz says the Mets are "thrilled'' at the recognition for their baseball-headed mascot. He says Mr. Met makes a lot of charity appearances.
Mr. Met will join mascots for baseball's Philadelphia Phillies, football's Kansas City Chiefs, basketball's Utah Jazz and other teams in the Hall of Fame.
